This title is inspired by the works of Lee Bontecou, who was a major influence throughout the making of this piece. Like Bontecou’s work, Untitled No. 1 responds to the ongoing war in the Middle East funded by the leader of our country. It was specifically inspired by a moment when more than 100 bombs were dropped in Lebanon within 10 minutes. Having Lebanese heritage through my grandfather, hearing this report on Democracy Now! by Amy Goodman affected me personally and emotionally.
The brooch has opposing front and back sides. The front mimics decay, rust, and flesh to reference the aftermath of bombing. On closer inspection, the phrase “Leave Me In Peace” appears within a radioactive energy caution symbol. The red perimeter and tensioned silk cords contrast with the green, resembling both a watermelon and Middle Eastern flag colors tied to suffering. The back reveals a peace sign resting against the wearer when adorned, teased through the 4 prongs that sets the enameled dome.
