Theodora Martino

Theodora Martino is a sculpture artist based in Philadelphia with a focus on ceramics. I gravitate towards creating abstract, rigid geometric forms. In my work, dozens of cubes are attached to one another by only an edge or a corner, seemingly hover in mid-air, forming a unified structure. My other work includes nails acting as points of an invisible grid. I often think of the fundamental shapes and supernatural energy that underlie the cosmos. I see the ability to portray meaning in simple shapes and materials that, at face value, can often be perceived as unemotional and cold. These forms refer to the immaterial, despite their solidity and weathered appearance. I start by creating a variety of different size cubes. Taking into account size, negative space, and balance, I intuitively decide how they best interact. I find this lets the work unfold naturally. My work takes me into an imaginative moment appreciating nature’s innermost structure, and to awe at the mystery of the universe.
