Kelly Shipp

I work primarily in ceramics, with a combination of underglaze and glaze surfaces. My work tries to encompass the dynamic motion of a moment. I sculpt animals that borrow from human activities, feelings and situations to create a feeling of purpose and connection. Animals have often been symbolic for different human traits throughout history, and I enjoy playing with the inherent assumptions we possess around animal imagery. I also create characters to be my studio friends. Working in ceramics is often a lonely isolated pursuit, and I have health conditions that also often isolate me from the larger world. So, my work is my imaginary community, filled with rich and complicated characters.
