JULIA FELD

Last year signified a big change in my personal and artistic life. These three cups are from the set of Kurinuki cups that were a reaction to my new environment. Even though South Carolina doesn’t have harsh winters, but it has four seasons, that was a revelation for me after living in California for a long time. Moving from a big city to the countryside, nature became a big part of my daily life. The leaves change their appearance in front of me from one season to the next, sparking my imagination in a strange way. This work doesn’t have my usual painterly surface, it is a reflection derived from the color of nature. Each cup represents one month of the year. Cups are hand-carved out of a solid block of clay. All the outside textures were done by pressing or smashing clay against different tree-trunks. The choice of colors was the result of the observation of the dominant color of the month. These three cups are September, October and November.
