Madeline Kelly

My father died of suicide when I was sixteen. Since then, I launched myself into my practice in art, trying to cope with and address the importance of suicide prevention and awareness. I take inspiration from my childhood – creating work with nostalgic feelings while also investigating more serious feelings of guilt and shame which allows me to look back and examine my life and relationship with my father leading up to his death. I make jewelry and utilize metal to create work such as brooches, rings, and neckpieces. My work shares a story of grief and loss, but it also shares a story of acceptance, growth, and a desire to connect with the world around me. Jewelry as an artform is especially important to my work as I value the connection with the body and the personal sentiment for the wearer. My artwork is a tool that helps me process and discuss heavy topics as I learn to maintain a sense of balance in my life between grief and happiness, while also creating a space for others to do the same.
