Emma Benschop

In my latest body of work, I am meditating on life and death and how we commemorate ourselves and others. During life, we decorate our bodies in many ways, but also in death, we design our fate. In making urns for myself annually, I look back at the year that has passed and make a vessel to contain it in. This will be an ongoing project for my life and will serve as a visual diary of my art style and mementos of the passing years. For Small Favors, I have specifically made some small urns and titled the series “Le Petit Mort” which is a sort of play on words in many ways. The Small Death as a direct translation but a euphemism in French for orgasm. Death and Life come together in these small vessels that are either useful or symbolic.
