Ian Bassett

My work explores simple utilitarian forms designed to be used everyday. I am inspired by traditional Japanese and Korean folk pottery. Soda firing my pots offers the surfaces and colors that I find to be subtle and dramatic. This tension creates a balance and sense of harmony that I enjoy exploring. I don’t consider myself much of a decorator but more of a mark maker hoping to capture a sense of movement, rhythm and calmness. My designs are largely inspired from the natural world. I use brush work; mark making and slip on simple quiet forms. They are embellished with surfaces and hues that quietly accentuate the form while bringing a sense of life end energy to the pot through mark making and design. Being influenced by “folk pottery” my practice is kept simple using a one or two slips for the exterior of my pots while implementing a shino and celadon glaze as my liners. My goal is to make pottery that is desired to be used and enjoyed by anyone.
