I am excited to share the newest piece in my Marine Abstract series, titled "Amethyst Wave."
This series was inspired by sea sponges, observed while diving in the Cayman Islands in 2019. Sponges act as the ocean's filtration system, clearing 90% of bacteria and viruses while producing oxygen. I chose amethyst as the accent for this petit abstract because the stone promotes peace and calm, with the hope that we can all be immersed in a wave of well-being.
While this series was in progress, the pandemic lockdown occurred in March 2020. Later that year, the COVID vaccine was developed, modeled after compounds found in sea sponges.
All life on Earth began in the sea, which continues to sustain us by providing over 50% of the planet’s oxygen. Sea sponges also modeled the first HIV treatment and the first marine-sourced drug for cancer. Protecting our planet’s oceans is a crucial investment, because our lives truly depend on it.
