In mythology, the octopus is often portrayed as a terrifying sea creature which ambushes sailors and brings ships to their resting place on the sea floor. In contrast to folklore, rather than destroying ships, when a female octopus gives birth for its first and only time, it "self destructs", forgoing food and remaining hidden from predators until passing after laying her clutch of eggs.
