A ceramic sea specimen. Using butcher’s twine in place of yarn, the body was fashioned by crochet. Over a period of a several weeks, the clay slip was slowly painted to retain the minute surface details. The slip encrusted twine is then fired in its entirety. These “slip dipped” pieces have a low survival rate through the firing stage as the slip coating is quite thin, making it difficult for the clay to support itself as the twine burns away. A delicate hand is then needed to install the metal finishing to avoid cracking the ceramic.
