JUSTIN BURSK

My artistic practice explores the subtle yet profound dialogue between collective memory and individual spirituality. By utilising the intimate scale of miniature ceramics, I seek to capture the "sacred glimmers" often overlooked in the vastness of our world. My work is deeply rooted in observations of Taiwanese vernacular aesthetics. I focus on historical architectural remnants, specifically highlighting the tension between the rigorous precision of original Japanese-era structures and the spontaneous, improvisational mending characteristic of the Taiwanese national character. In Taiwan, the "destruction" caused by relentless earthquakes and typhoons is an inseparable part of our architectural landscape. However, unlike cultures that strive for total restoration of original order, Taiwanese people exhibit a unique, loose, and resilient approach to repair. Through the technique of Kintsugi, I do not merely fix these ruins; I celebrate this informal, chaotic, yet vibrant survival aesthetic, transforming environmental trauma into a powerful momentum for reconstruction. Simultaneously, I explore the posture of the individual within eternity through the hidden and intimate relationship of "nourishment" between humans and objects. To me, these miniature creations are more than static forms—they are "vessels of spirituality". They require a daily, internal ritual of care; through this invisible interaction, one invests emotion and belief into the object, which in turn becomes a physical manifestation of one’s inner strength. Whether reconstructing the clash between rigid order and spontaneous disorder in historical facades or capturing the solitary serenity of a life form atop a silent peak, my work builds a "sanctuary" within a four-inch cube. It is a sincere invitation for viewers to lean in and rediscover the persistent, resilient vitality that blooms within the cracks of history and the scars of nature.
