Saori Matsushita

My current work explores mythical beasts of burden and the Latin alphabet. These hand-built ceramic creatures quietly carry human loads sealed within symbolic “loadstones.” From the outside they appear as simple letters or numbers; only the bearer knows their true weight and meaning. Carried with grace, these delicately balanced burdens transform into sources of strength and purpose. Though my primary focus are beasts of burden, I enjoy making the occasional rabbit piece. I work intuitively with clay, embracing its natural flow and the perfectly imperfect results—handmade marks that give each piece its own unique character. For the Small Favors 4-inch cube format, I distill these ideas into small, intimate objects that invite close looking and personal connection. These tiny beasts carry the same spirit as my larger work: quiet, resilient, and made to be treasured.
