Dierdre McKee

Jacky Denaway is a ceramic artist based in Kalamazoo, Michigan. She is also an adjunct professor at Western Michigan University where she received her MFA in Ceramics, MA in Art Education, BFA in Graphic Design and BFA in Art Education. She has presented and demonstrated her ceramic process at the state and national level and has exhibited her work nationally. Her work explores functional pottery as a vehicle for portraying feminine histories, specifically that of the maternal. Looking to history as well as our own experiences, we can see that the domestic and feminine are intimately interwoven with ceramic vessels. American cultural constructs surrounding traditional maternal roles idealize the love and service expected of mothers. This service is rooted in the home and service of functional pottery. Jacky’s inspiration comes from historical domestic objects, textiles, wallpaper, feminine handicrafts, and gardens, as well as her lived experience. Ultimately the story she seeks to tell through the functional pottery is personal, yet relatable as we are all tied to the maternal story in some way.
