The Life Jacket/Survival works emerged after creating a series of figures in environments using clay bodies, limited glaze colors, modeled facial features and gestures to evoke interior emotional responses and I thought “since I am using the environment as a metaphor, what if I removed the body and just left a suggestion?” To me these works use the metaphor of water and life jackets to evoke the idea of being awash in uncertainty and trying to stay moored, on shore, or at least afloat. Water can suggest drowning (feeling overwhelmed) or the discomfort of being a fish out of water but can also can symbolize life, adaptability, and constant change.
