Tori Abelson

My work explores themes of self-expression and challenges conventional ideas around identity. Much of my inspiration comes from my identity as a queer individual, and the duality of my experience as an artist and athlete. Navigating the worlds of Division 1 basketball and art simultaneously highlighted the ways people often expect identity to conform to certain appearances or roles. The idea that someone or something doesn’t need to look, act, or perform a specific way to hold value drives much of my creative practice. I’m drawn to pushing the boundaries of ceramics because it offers a way to explore the complexity of self and the nuances of presentation. Each piece I create merges form, decoration, and function in order to reflect identity.
