Matt Zimmerman

My work investigates the familiarity of my own body, as well as the unknown future. Through the abstraction of rounded volumes, light pink velvet finishes, and odd protrusions, anatomical whimsy draws the fine line between beauty and the grotesque, and my yearning for future motherhood. Lumps, folds, and concave imprints are compiled next to one another creating a conglomeration of body parts. Examining my emotions towards my own body through clay, I study and find beauty in folds of overlapping skin, questioning the personal negativity towards my own body while revering the same shapes in sculpture. Small pieces resting on top of large, fleshy, pink forms are rooted in parent-child relationships. I imagine their weight affecting the larger pieces by creating a concave to cradle into.
