Naomi Brown

My name is Jiayue Chai, and I am a graduate student at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education. I spend a lot of my free time making small objects in makerspaces. I especially like working with acrylic and laser cutting because acrylic can be used in many different ways. Different structures, cutting methods and layers can create very different effects. For example, internal cuts can make mirror-like or metallic reflections inside, while painted layers can create colorful acrylic images with depth. Many of my works are based on realistic objects or elements that I like, such as animals, astronomical objects, and playful everyday small things. I have made acrylic necklaces, earrings, pins, and puzzles. I enjoy turning flat drawings into physical objects. For me, making is a way to record memorable things that I like and explore what a material can do.
