JUSTIN BURSK

I use humor and familiar moments of embarrassment to explore discomfort, avoidance, and the things people are often reluctant to acknowledge directly. I've created pieces that invite viewers into experiences that feel simultaneously funny, awkward, and emotionally charged. Your Fly's Down is part of an ongoing series titled Don't Look At It, inspired by grief, vulnerability, and the social instinct to look away from uncomfortable realities. The series uses everyday situations - broccoli in your teeth, an open fly, a booger hanging from a nose - as humorous entry points into larger conversations about discomfort, mortality, and human connection. This Small Favors version translates a larger illuminated sculpture into a handheld scale while maintaining its interactive quality. Activated by an external light source, the miniature piece uses humor, light, and participation to invite viewers to engage with subjects they might otherwise ignore.
