JUSTIN BURSK

My work focuses on form and structure more than than surface or finish. I’m interested in blending wheel-throwing and hand-building, joining forms and adding sculptural elements, and I’m drawn to sculptural shapes and to functional objects that behave a little like sculpture. I appreciate the utilitarian roots of pottery, and the low-stakes mud it’s made from. I like that you can form a piece and then, up to a point, essentially melt it down and start over with the same materials. This allows me a freedom that lets me drop self-consciousness and stay focused on the physical act of making so I can access the direct relationship of hand to mind that can arise from creative flow.
