Mimi VanBeber

My ceramic work sits at the intersection of mathematics, pattern, and unpredictability. I work primarily in porcelain with a focus on nerikomi, a Japanese technique in which colored clay is layered and sliced to reveal pattern. I draw inspiration from everyday observations—soap floating on water, the patterns of fabric, erosion in rock, and the shifting shapes and colors that emerge when I squint my eyes. My practice is rooted in experimentation, from the unpredictable nature of nerikomi to hand-built, slip-cast, and wheel-thrown forms fired in salt, wood, and oxidation kilns, each process chosen for what it might unexpectedly reveal. I am drawn to systems, structure, and predictability, yet my work embraces everything I cannot control. The most compelling pieces emerge in the narrow space between intention and outcome.
