Pattie Chalmers

At first glance, even though my principle medium is clay, my work might appear somewhat disjointed; I make objects, figurative work, vessels, and pottery, among other things, and though visually distinct, each approach is linked by a connection to narrative and memory. Through my work, I attempt to depict some of life’s complicated experiences—the death of a first love, the diminishing of a parent, or the recollections of a lifetime of relationships, for example. I am inherently a storyteller, and though my work is narrative in nature, I imagine it as more of a poem than a novel, and I find it most successful when it functions as a conduit to shared reminiscences and imagination. I choose clay to create my work because of what clay adds to the content of a piece: the quality of hardness and also fragility, and clay's ability to resemble something as hard as a coin or as soft as a water balloon, something as heavy as a wrench, or as light as pantyhose. My enduring interest in the language of still-life paintings and the nature of objectness led me to create these objects and many more in what started as portraits of my relationships but evolved into something new when others shared their associations. I find the capacity of a seemingly mundane memento to hold a memory and then ignite a connection magical.
