Christina Hanula

Growing up, my childhood was marked by an immense amount of instability- from unsanitary, hoarded houses to neglect and parentification. As a child trapped in that environment, it was disheartening to see other kids who had attentive nuclear families and were thriving in nurturing environments. I’ve realized growing up in such an unstable environment has significantly shaped my identity and belief systems, has left me with a skewed view of relationships, and continues to influence how I perceive the world. My work delves into the repercussions of developmental adversity. Each piece is inspired by an aspect of my own developmental trauma, which I allow to evolve organically through coil building. This results in biomorphic forms that reflect elements of growth, resilience, and adaptation. Through my work, I acknowledge the indelible impact of childhood trauma. I challenge the conventional notion of the nuclear family and conversely celebrate individualism, adaptability, and persistence.
