My sculptures are made from wild and commercial clays. Curiosity about the visceral familiarity of bodies and behavior in other creatures drives my work. I explore our biological and emotional bond to the animal world but leave room for a sometimes disturbing sense of otherness that may follow. I am fascinated by this balance of the alien and familiar. My captivation with wildlife was born of a childhood in farm fields and forests. A biology career added hours handling, and studying animals. My art education is informal and piecemeal. The family woodshop informs my handbuilding approach and pit firing my aesthetic. I begin by sketching and watching animals in motion. Stiff clay slabs form the curves and angles of the body. Rich but spare textures are supplemented with stains and clay slip which create depth in earthen hues. My work explores complexity in animal forms and behavior distilled into essential planes. I garb my pieces in the ample palette and grain of natural clays.
