Kate LeVering

Kate LeVering - Sculptor: I am moved and fascinated by the natural world. There is great beauty in the incredible diversity of structure and texture in the animal world. I am drawn in by the emotions evoked by their bodies and behaviors and I feel a strong pull to capture those details in sculpture. My goal is to help others appreciate the complexity of lines and movement that I perceive and create an object that distills and communicates my instinctive reactions. My perspective is informed by my lifetime passion as a naturalist and early career as a behavioral biologist. My work seldom focuses on the same posture or expression in more than one piece, although I may do multiple copies of the same work if my first attempt does not adequately capture the vision I have. My series most often seek to capture the interactions of individuals or a range of behaviors in a single species. My 3 submissions are from a series of small bison sculptures I am doing that are an example of the latter.
