Lindsey Howarth

I am deep in reverie when throwing silkie, cool white porcelain on the wheel. Shaping the clay into its predetermined shape gives me a sense of control in a world of ambiguity. On the pot’s surface I explore the tactile experience of pottery. The exposed, unadorned clay is contrasted by fluent gloss of layered, translucent glaze diligently applied in applique. I choose mishima, an intimate meditative process of inlay design, to pay homage to flora and patterns I have observed on adventures with my family. My intent is to create pottery that facilitates mindfulness about the utilitarian objects we surround ourselves with- their beauty, purpose, and their permanence.
