Clare Farrow

Wheel throwing is the closest I’ve come to a meditative practice. The deep focus required allows for observing how the subtlest shifts in movement or mood leave their mark on the clay. Each piece becomes a reflection of the moment it was made—a quiet story embedded in the form. I am captivated by the making process, and my work seeks to celebrate and share that journey with the viewer. Once thrown, my pieces enter a wood-fired kiln, an inherently unpredictable method of firing. Over many hours of artists tending the kiln with logs, ash drifts and settles, creating organic textures and patterns that can’t be replicated. This dynamic interplay between meticulously crafted forms and the kiln’s spontaneous atmosphere is at the heart of my work. Through subtle hints in form and finish, I hope to highlight the wonder of how each piece came into being: shaped as much by fire as by my hands. Earthy glazes and raw textures ground my pieces in the natural world, often the inspiration and subject of my work. One's relationship with nature is at once both personal and universal, and I aim to play into that to evoke feelings of reverence, connection, and nostalgia.
