Erika Ashihara Barrall

My pottery practice explores how a single simple form can give birth to a range of pieces with diverging styles and appearance through different decorative and hand building techniques. Pottery is just as much about the experience of creating as it is about the final piece. The meditative practice of throwing repeated versions of the same form gives space to imagine the different fates of each piece, and the handbuilding process brings these feelings to life. My small form trinket boxes convey the importance of the small little things in life. They are both functional and create small moments of intrigue; they invite the observer to wonder what kinds of items are, or could be, stored inside based on the outward appearance.
