I find balance in equal extremes, like a balance scale being weighed out in two or more opposing pans. When I woodfire, I purposely make detailed work. Admittedly this can be a difficult thing - ash often obscures details, sometimes to the point of failure, but other times I see it as almost a gauze being drawn over the surface of a design, creating something more mysterious than I could create on purpose. The aspect of chance in the woodfiring process adds to the romance of a partially obscured image. I like thinking about my woodfired objects as found items in a pile of rubble - some sort of remains, or preserved treasure.
