This series began in Summer 2024, when I was teaching art to a group or children using clay. Clay has never been my medium of choice to work with. However, as I started creating trophy heads, I fell in love with it. We were using air dry clay, and I wanted to create art with longevity, so I started working with kiln fire clay. I love learning about mythical creatures and decided to create a series of mythical creature trophy heads. While these creatures have never existed, I was thinking about “what if they did?” and “how could they be preserved and presented?”. I imagined the answer may be trophy heads. I am interested in the concept of trophy hunting as in pertains to the preservation and conservation of animals. As climate change progresses, animal habitats disappear due to encroaching human expansion, and more animals become extinct, I may turn my focus to creating miniature trophy heads of actual animals that are at risk or are no more.
