Kai Lemis

My work is an exploration of my multifaceted identity as a queer, Chinese American adoptee. I’m heavily influenced by religious iconography of East Asian Buddhism, Daoist philosophies, and the anatomy of complex organisms. My sculptures live in the space between the binaries: not quite human, not quite non-human. They glitch, mutate, and fragment, becoming strange, metaphysical beings. Using hand-building techniques, I look to create a realm where figures morph with the unknown, like speculative creatures of the future or deep sea anomalies of the past. I look to create a similar atmosphere to the other-worldly nature of the ocean and its hauntingly beautiful animals. Meditative themes are also evident in complex visual lines, movement, and repetition but are disrupted by introducing mutation of the figure. Through these explorations, I continue to understand humanity as being both mutably corporeal and introspectively otherworldly.
