Jamie Zimchek

Jamie Zimchek is a multi-disciplinary artist based in the United States. Conceptually, her work revolves around an investigation of the popular narratives promulgated by power systems from the intimate and domestic to the more public and political. Of particular interest is the way these systems use calculated storylines to protect their authority, often falling back on absurd social constructs and relying on fear of the Other to protect deeply entrenched self-interests. Her intention is not to dismantle these systems entirely, rather to undermine their claims to truth by challenging assumptions about the sacred. Zimchek’s studio approach is playful and experimental utilizing a mix of more conventional techniques such as painting, metalworking, and ceramics while incorporating less traditional materials from plastic shower curtains and power cords to astroturf and faux fur. Zimchek has an MA in Mediterranean Studies from King’s College London and an MFA in Visual Art from Vermont College of Fine Arts. Zimchek is currently based in Northwest Florida and an instructor in the art department at Gulf Coast State College.
