Elianna Pérez

I am fascinated by details. Details picked up by our senses ground us to familiar spaces creating connection. My work focuses on the connection to a space through details and interaction that builds community. Growing up in an urban neighborhood viewed more often for crime than culture forced me to find the beauty and power of my surroundings. Thus my turn to details: to the ornamental gated porches and clusters of scattered dandelions on unmowed lawns, to the community of neighbors sharing common experiences of Spanish language and Caribbean food, block parties and porch conversations on hot summer nights. When translated to clay, the carved designs ornately adorn each piece, making the seemingly insignificant admirable, preserving happy memory from a perceivably harsh place. Through sculptural and functional ware, I connect the details and experiences of my Latino neighborhood and upbringing in Philadelphia with my family’s roots in Puerto Rico, illuminating overlooked beauty rooted in culture, family and community.
