Pam Smith

As an artist, I incorporate oceanic elements into my work. My work is about the beauty found in the deep blue that makes the ocean a worldly treasure. It’s also a representation of beauty, no matter the result. There is always value found in it. I was so fascinated by the ocean when I was a small child, but I never knew why. I am still captivated by the sea, but I realize that the reasons don’t matter. Whether it be the mystery of depths yet to be discovered, or surface beauty within our reach, I continue to be intrigued. I am always on a quest to imagine and create based on life within the water. My work is an ongoing river of what makes the sea unique. Clay is used to creating art that lasts for centuries to come. I find ceramics to be the perfect representation of beauty in imperfection. Pottery contains beauty no matter the origin or the age. I experiment with textures and glazes to get the results I want with my original pieces. I enjoy experimenting with textures, and my work is always a bit rough on the surface. I appreciate jagged edges, as this break-in of a smooth line looks flawed but more interesting. The project itself is telling the story, through me. Others can read the story it represents by just viewing it. The “perfect” pieces are undoubtedly valuable, but a more unique art piece can be created when spontaneous reactions happen in the firing process. If a piece I am working on breaks or cracks, I accept it as a natural progression in its artistic journey. My vision is to allow spontaneous art to take form and be appreciated. This element of mystery, combined with the unexpected, embodies my fascination with the sea in my artwork. The techniques I’ve developed, and the series of works that I’ve created, represent how I’ve evolved as a ceramicist. I expect I will learn a lot more about different approaches in the future. I look forward to sharing these pieces with the artistic community.
