Rebekah Wostrel

My ceramic work is characterized by simplicity, intimacy, and refined imperfection, informed by the traditional Japanese aesthetic of wabi sabi. I keep tools to a minimum with my pots, choosing to leave the marks and traces of making—the coil and slab seams, finger dents and cracked edges made rough by stretching—rims are energized and left raw to evidence the materiality of the clay. My surface treatments range from minimalist glazes and subtle textures to playfully awkward line drawings. I want my pots to feel good in the hand and be easy to use. It’s my hope that people who engage with them experience a sense of connection and comfort—that my pots ‘make special’ the everyday-ness of daily use.
