Jennifer Evans Arbo

Sunlight passes through a stem of leaves, bedroom window blinds, a lamp stand, a flower vase. As the day unfolds, light curves around the objects of our homes effortlessly creating new flowing shapes and soft hues throughout the space. In a few moments, the light fades and the compositions are lost. In my art practice I take the fluid, ephemeral compositions of light and solidify them into pottery to be brought back into the home. I start my process by throwing and handbuilding familiar forms from home. Then, I capture the light’s interaction with each clay form as it creates a new composition on my pottery’s surface. Each highlight is shifted forward, while each shadow is shifted backward. Through these cuts and shifts in clay, I solidify an ephemeral moment into a time-tested medium. Each piece is cast in soft, pastel colors that mimic sunlight and shadow with darker glazes in the recessed panels of my pieces and lighter glazes on the raised panels. While holding and using each piece, these edges created by the shifts of clay serve as visual and tactile reminders of the interaction of light and shadow within my pottery.
