Maria White

I am inspired by the forms, textures and various patterns that I discover primarily in the natural world. Light is an integral part of my work and I am interested in how it interacts with the objects I make. I explore how light is reflected, absorbed, radiated, and experienced. Working typically in porcelain, most of my pieces are thrown on the potter’s wheel and carved while other vessels are cast to achieve translucency. Other works are simple, serene and understated. I strive to create work that celebrates both form and function and may be used daily. I choose to be a ceramic artist, in particular, because clay has been a powerful, dynamic tool for healing and creativity in my life and it has also allowed for me the opportunity to connect and collaborate with others and build community.
