Drew Herstam
Working within the tradition of functional ceramics, my clay work strives to balance utility with interest, creating humble objects that serve to nourish both in use at the table and when observed on the shelf. Presence of hand is a central theme to my work and I am highly conscious of decisions that consider where it is allowed to be fully present or, conversely, concealed. I am most drawn to the surfaces and firing effects created through serendipity, and so my approach seeks to embrace the ceramic processes and materials that may only be influenced and guided by the decisions and practices of the maker - a layered dance that continually leaves me intrigued, surprised and rewarded.
