My finishes are inspired by graffiti and my travels to Europe. I took a street art tour in Shoreditch of London and that has had a profound influence on my work. I try to recreate those gritty surfaces by layering bold imagery and text while mixing in elements of my own design work. I am pushing the idea of taking functional contemporary forms and slathering them with so much information you’re captivated to explore every inch of the surface. My work centers around one word: RIOT. I make mostly functional work, and my recent graffiti inspired works main imagery is generated using AI. The animal figures in my new work represent people in my life. I’ve been making these ducks since I took a slipcast/moldmaking workshop with Calvin Ma in 2017. I needed an object to make a two-part mold of and my daughters were very young. Each night giving them baths they would play with rubber ducky’s in the tub. I took one to the workshop. They’ve taken on a life of their own, but are special to me as they make me nostalgic to the time when my kids were smaller. I do make them to sell, but also leave them places whenever I travel for people to find. LUCKY DUCKS.
