The experiences we have each day shape our internal landscape. The nature of this landscape in turn affects our relationships. Our words, body language, actions, and connections or disconnections are the products of this landscape. I’m interested in this symbiotic relationship between experience and human connection. I create work that helps me process the experiences of daily life as a parent, partner, friend, neighbor, citizen, and steward in order to better understand myself, my relationships, and the culture in which I live. I want people to be able to relate my work to their own lives, recognize familiar emotions and experiences, tap into a universal sense of the human experience. Thus, various themes continue to arise in my work, including connection and disconnection, body language, spacial relationships, and time and impermanence. I’m very influenced by the performative art of contemporary dance as well as origami and the ceramic arts. I’ve always felt more comfortable working in tactile, three-dimensional media. Artist Books are particularly interesting to me for their ability to offer a vehicle for words, texture, shapes, lines, and movement in time. An artist book can tackle global issues while offering an intimate, quiet experience. A book feels personal in a way that other media doesn’t always feel. Ultimately, I seek these quiet, personal moments with the viewer.
