Wendy Withrow

The external world presses in around us. News headlines accumulate, storms increase in size and frequency, fear builds, words get heavier, simple choices become politicized, systems oppress, nervous systems max out, overwhelm consumes, rage percolates. Unable to contain it all, I make. I make to release. I make to protest. I make to connect. As a parent, partner, friend, neighbor, citizen, and steward, I make to better understand myself, my relationships, and the culture in which I live. I want people to be able to relate my work to their own lives, recognize familiar emotions and experiences, think differently and deeply, tap into a universal sense of the human experience. Various social issues continue to arise in my work, such as gun violence and climate change. Underlying these social issue, however, are themes of time and impermanence, shared experience, connection to our humanity and the gestures of care that nurtures it. I’m very influenced by the performative art of contemporary dance as well as origami and the ceramic arts. I am drawn to tactile, three-dimensional media. Artist Books are particularly interesting to me for their ability to offer a vehicle for words, texture, shapes, lines, and movement in time. An artist book can tackle global issues while offering an intimate, quiet experience. More recently, I have begun exploring movement through video and performance works.
