I make work to create an atmosphere of playful intimacy–moments of pause and intrigue for both myself and the user. Clay forces me to slow down and tend to my practice with patience, care, and humility. In the studio, I experiment with and explore a wide variety of materials and techniques, looking for interesting aesthetic solutions. I use sprigs in my work as both structural and decorative elements. They provide infinite combinations of imagery, textures, and patterns, and communicate a notion of a previous life and sense of place. It is like I’m embedding a secret message in the work, which only those who choose to linger can decode–a bit of an inside joke among me and the viewer and the work. As an antidote to fast culture, my work invites the viewer to dwell on and delight in the details. It is a reminder to seek and cultivate beauty in daily life.
