Janice Ho

As a self-taught ceramic artist hand building in stoneware, my work honors my ancestry, features botanical and biological themes, and expresses feelings and thoughts that are deeply personal yet universal. My series of heads are sort of self portraits of my inner workings, with ideas, worries, feelings, energy, all making their way out. These emotions and thoughts find their roots in learned beliefs and the cultures we are grown in. I’ve also been thinking about my ancestors who worked in clay out of necessity, but also hopefully with some joy. Then came many generations who didn’t have the option to create with their hands for the sake of personal expression. Somehow this desire lay dormant or unrealized in the dna during this time, and I am the first to get to actualize it in so long. My Meolithic series takes forms from Neolithic Chinese pottery and combines them with influences from biology, botany, and expressions of self.
