Janice Ho

As a self-taught ceramic artist hand building in stoneware, my work honors my ancestry, loves on botanical and biological themes, and embodies feelings and thoughts that feel deeply personal yet are also universal. My series of heads are sort of self portraits of my inner workings, with ideas, worries, emotions, energy, all making their way out. This small series feature some forms that resemble shield lichen - genus Parmelia. I always love finding them on hikes, looking so calm, steady, growing without any concerns. Lichen are actually symbiotic lifeforms: a fungus plus an algae, working together to make life happen. I've been thinking a lot about how humans are in a social and emotional symbiosis, so much of it unspoken and organic, but sometimes needing definition and clarity, all of us symbiotic animals finding our way.
