Ashley Fulton

I have been enamored with Japanese ceramics, history, and culture since discovering a love of clay in a community college ceramics class. I almost always throw my work off of the hump on my kickwheel, just as I originally learned. These two sake cups were made of porcelain and then wood-fired in a train kiln named “Ursa” on Bear Mountain in Moonridge, Colorado. The surface decoration was painted with Strontium Blue and a purple wood-ash glaze. I have been a potter for over 20 years and a public school art teacher for the last 16 years. I teach Ceramics and Sculpture to secondary students in Denver Public Schools. While it can be hard to have gas in the tank at the end of the day for my own art-making, it is important to me to be a model of creativity for my students. I strive to continue playing and exploring in my own work with the intention of always trying to improve my craft. It’s been a personal goal to put my work out there more in applying for calls for entry like this one.
