Shannnon Coleman

As a ceramic artist, my work is an exploration of the balance between aesthetics and functionality. Through wheel throwing and hand-building, each piece serves both a practical purpose and becomes a canvas for creative exploration. I employ a diverse range of surface decoration techniques, using them as tools to layer texture and pattern onto my work. Among these techniques, etching and carving through layers of colored slip and underglaze hold a special place in my practice. This method not only exposes the contrasting clay beneath but also offers a meditative experience in the tactile act of carving. Nature inspires my work and the interplay of positive and negative space is a crucial element, creating a dynamic interplay of light and shadow that accentuates the carved lines and texture. To infuse a contemporary touch, I often add handmade overglaze decals, creating a playful dialogue between traditional and modern design elements. Echoing the patterns of the carved images, these decals create a playful juxtaposition between the organic nature of clay and modern pattern design. The fusion of the traditional with the modern invites creates a continuous dialogue between the two aesthetics.
