Claire Shenk Rodgers

Claire Shenk Rodgers I’ve been working for over 45 years in electric fired stoneware, porcelain, colored clays and glazes. The two prevailing focuses for my work are Form and Surface. I find my Form by paying attention to the volume that fills the inside of each piece; and by carefully delineating the profile on the outside of each piece. As each pot comes into being it is expanded from the inside to give the outside skin a pleasing form - a form that comes alive from within. The Surface is then an extension of this volume, which I consider a canvas for abstracted images that reference landscapes from the places I have traveled. I catalogue graphic areas from photographs, past work and memory that I feel are most successful; and reuse and expand upon them for each design. My larger forms draw together my attraction for scale, a painterly surface, and edge design and flow. The lightweight and strength of the clay body that I have formulated allows me to work on, transport and fire these large pieces by myself. The pots are covered with stoneware and porcelain slips, clay additions and impressed lines. They are fired, delineated with wax and stains, spray glazed and re-fired. I feel that within the boundaries of the ceramic field, I can reach for an artistic whole that expresses my spirit. It is my desire to create vital forms that revel in a subtle attention to detail.
