When speaking through artwork, I am able to communicate beyond the language of words. I develop a visual and tactile language and a connection, through a functional object, is formed with another person. Clay in its raw state has a way of captivating a maker on a personal level of trust. The bond between the medium and the artist is something I find fascinating; the balance between force, control, patience and repetition hold together the process of my work. This obsessive all-consuming making is a calming mechanism that helps me express myself in the easiest way I know, working with my hands. I am fascinated by the small things I find in large environments. Like clay, there is a rawness to these subjects. Mushrooms is an organism that feeds off of decay and brings life from ruin; and the intricate mycelium that silently help keep ecosystems in check. While slugs are the bottom feeders of the land they inhabit and they help by feeding on dying plants and fruit to clean the forest floor. I respect these little friends and I find them to be beautiful in their own wonderful way. I find myself relating to these overlooked helpers in how they passively help their surroundings at their own pace. Like the passive interaction I have with the people when it comes to clay, no matter how small.
