John Quick
My name is John Quick and I am a queer artist living in Philadelphia. I primarily make functional ceramics but lately have been considering the interaction between form and surface. My most recent work explores methods of building up patterns inspired by nostalgic y2k tattoos, using methods of slip trailing. In addition to highly patterned surfaces I am also working with cold finishing techniques of adding rhinestones to the negative spaces around my trailed patterns. I’m interested in the interaction of these maximalist surfaces and the fairly minimal forms and how the viewer might react to so much visual information. This series is a window into my sentiments for a time and place that feels simultaneously safe and dangerous, soft but hard.
