Fred Henzel

I create hand-built sculptural forms from porcelain because it is beautiful, bright white in color and strong. I work with clay because I love the process as much as the finished pieces. I either use underglazes to paint my designs onto smooth dry greenware or I create designs on porcelain by using a small roller to impress thin strips of moist colored clay onto newly rolled slabs of white porcelain. I use mason stains to color the clay. I will cut the decorated slab into ¾” strips and build my forms up using these strips. Most of my pots are nonfunctional because the mouths on the pots are tiny. I build my pots to push upwards like earth forms. Line is very important in my work. I use a variety of lines to communicate emotion and to create movement. My dash- like lines, inspired by sewing, draw you through my pieces. I do calligraphy and am inspired by artists like Ben Shahn who create powerful work with edgy emotional lines and letter forms. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is my favorite place to wander and to photograph ceramics of world civilizations. At home I can reference my photos and draw those pieces in my sketchbook where they provide ideas for new forms and new surface treatments. My recent trip to Costa Rica inspired me to cover my pots with birds in flight, with butterflies and with plants of the rain forest. My goal is to create beautiful work which will engage the viewer and encourage him/her/they to slow down and to come closer to really look at it.
