Katie M Barnes

Hi! I’m Katie Barnes, creator of a million tiny houses. I started out in ceramics by throwing traditional bowls and mugs on the wheel. When the pandemic struck, my neighborhood ceramics studio in Columbia, MO shut down and I was forced to find a new creative outlet. I started working with clay at my kitchen table and shaped a little house. I fell in love, and whole cities later, I haven’t stopped. My work explores the concept of home and our relationship to the structures that house us. In all of my tiny houses, I imagine the kinds of lovely people who might live inside and am filled with cozy feelings and respect for my own home. My ceramic houses are made of porcelain or stoneware clay, using nontoxic underglazes and mason stains. Each house is created by hand, and never from a mold. I make all of my own window and door stamps, giving each house it’s own unique personality. My houses are currently on display at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City and the Columbia Art League in Missouri. My houses have been part of multiple shows at the Sager Reeves Art Gallery in Columbia, Missouri.
