Ji Shin

My first encounter with utilitarian objects was with my grandmother's Pyrex and CorningWare. These cherished items evoke joy, community, and togetherness, inspiring me to infuse my pottery with the same spirit. As a utilitarian potter, I design everyday objects that invite both use and reflection. My work often features animal imagery, lending an illustrative quality intended to bring a sense of comfort and joy. The animals I use in my work are purposeful and come to me through memories and interactions with these creatures. My background patterns are influenced by textiles, plants, and motifs found on antiques. By incorporating this type of imagery, I hope to bridge a connection between the viewer and my work, encouraging them to associate their own interactions, memories, and interests with my pieces. I am fascinated by the intimate relationship between people and the objects they use daily, and I strive for my vessels to be not only functional but also meaningful companions in daily rituals. I want the viewer to explore my forms and have it be an experience for them. Letting their eyes wander over the vessel to find the details within the exterior and interior, keeping them engaged in a sense of play. The use of paper stencils and colored engobes and underglazes creates layers for designs and patterns, utilizing a pastel color palette that is soft, warm, and inviting. Colors and imagery are meant to evoke feelings of nostalgia and charm.
